Javier Vercher

Javier Vercher (Spain)

The reception that the jazz press has given Javier Vercher is more than flattering. The Spanish saxophonist, without reservation, ranks prominently in the straight jazz tradition – somewhere between Hank Mobley and George Coleman. Born in Madrid, he started playing the saxophone and flute at an early age, while his studies at Boston's Berklee College of Music brought him close to musicians such as Mark Turner, Jerry Bergonzi, Steve Lacy, Mike Stern, Curtis Fuller – from whom he learned much. After finishing his studies, he became a member of drummer Bob Moses' group - while he is in constant contact with all the active musicians of the Spanish scene (Jorge Rossy, Perico Sambeat, Rubem Dantas, Luciana Souza, etc.). His first solo album, “Introducing the Javier Vercher Trio,” was released last year – featuring guest appearances by pianist Robert Glasper and drummer Bob Moses. Javier Vercher is currently based in New York.
