The “Ar Trio” was born when trumpeter Laurent Filipe met pianist Joao Paulo in the late 70s. Despite their young age – at the time – the two musicians had enough experience in jazz that they were considered capable of participating in the Cascais International Jazz Festival, one of the most historic festivals in Portugal and Europe. In the 80s and while living in Paris, Laurent Filipe met bassist Carlos Barreto and they worked together on several club and festival appearances. Thus, the foundations of the trio have deep roots, with the result that today their music sounds rich and full of content. Both Joao Paulo and Carlos Barreto are inspired by a powerful poetic and narrative flare that is evident and ever-present in their musical approach both as individuals and as a group.
