Maria Joao is well known on the international world jazz scene today. She started her involvement with jazz in the early 80s and by the middle of the same decade she had already started to impress. Each Maria Joao project is also a separate field of expressive investigation - and each of her appearances (concert or recording) is an experience. Maria Joao works steadily with the pianist Mário Laginha and the musical connection they have achieved between them gives excellent artistic / aesthetic results but also opportunities for creative collaboration with excellent musicians such as António Pinho Vargas, Carlos Bica, Joe Zawinul, Thomas Quasthoff, Gilberto Gil, Laureen Newton, Bobo Stenson, Christof Lauer and many more. The collaboration between Maria and Mário spans almost three decades and is reflected in a multitude of concerts around the world and special recordings such as “Danças”, “Fábula”, “Cor”, “Lobos, Raposas e Coiotes”, “Chorinho Feliz”, “ Mumadji”, “Undercovers”, “Tralha” and “Chocolate”. The coexistence of Laginha and Joao - on record or on stage - transforms the event into creativity and emotion. The music they make is, above all, the music they like and enjoy - the music they want to make. Listening to it, we can see the authenticity and the culture it conveys - not only from Portugal but also from the rest of the world...
