He is not just one of the best trumpet players of the contemporary American jazz scene – in 2014 he won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition – but also one of the greatest composers / leading figures of African-American music in all of its variety. He brings together gospel and soul music just creatively as he does with hip-hop and electronic music, whereas he has formed his personal sound out of the Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw post-bop tradition. As far as his personal discography goes, from New Gospel Revisited till his latest release Soul Sign, the result is always full of surprises.
