Valia Calda mix western psychedelic jazz and lush improvisations with the musical tradition of Epirus and a DIY punk attitude to create their own guerilla-style sonic universe. The official Greek entry in this year’s Athens Jazz Festival is one of the most exciting bands in the contemporary international jazz scene, with major musical media like Bandcamp and The Quietus praising their two stand-out albums Methexis (2018) and Homeland (2023), while their songs were heard on some of the most famous radio stations worldwide, such as KEXP, BBC, Worldwide FM, NTS, Soho Radio and others. Created by the Ziarkas brothers out of London, this diverse musical band pull from a variety of influences, but never lose sight of their homeland and its traditions, building social and cultural bridges across the various borders of the Western world. At a time of widespread conflict, the proud, uncompromising sound of Valia Calda stands out as an act of solidarity and resistance.
