21st Athens Jazz Festival – Women in Jazz

The City of Athens presents:

21st Athens Jazz

Women in Jazz

23 – 29.05.2022

Let there be… Athens Jazz!

The most beloved festival in Athens is back with a new vision, a new name, a new identity, and new events in Technopolis and all around the city!

After last year's highly successful hybrid edition, Athens Jazz is back for a whole week, from May 23 to 29, at the Athens Technopolis and all around the city with Women in Jazz.

The city's longest-running musical institution is changing, evolving, and leaving the boundaries of Technopolis, enriched with new events. It is back more dynamic than ever before with a new name, identity, and vision.

The festival that, for 21 years now, has been signaling the beginning of summer music festivals, an iconic meeting point for people of all ages, at the heart of Technopolis, is eventually "opening up" to the rest of the city, becoming the only place to be, - and officially - THE festival of the whole of Athens, named Athens Jazz!

Athens Jazz is first and foremost music, the music that has been heard over the years from its stage and the music that will be heard. It is inspired by and wishes to inspire through freedom, diversity, improvisations, and its variety of jazz music. Its theme for 2022 is Women in Jazz, which means all women in the limelight. Its sounds, bright colours, rhythms, harmony, creativity, continuities and constant contrast are no longer limited to Technopolis, but "flood" the entire city, shaping this year's new visual identity, which we are proud to present!

With Women in Jazz as its central theme, seeking to highlight the issue of female representation in music and jazz, in particular, promoting the music and stories of women, Athens Jazz is proposing, this year, an exceptional musical programme. On the Technopolis stage, we will have the privilege to hear live a total of 21 female artists, all-female bands and groups with frontwomen from Europe and worldwide. All of them, accomplished musicians with international careers, important achievements and appearances at the most significant festivals, bring their new, contemporary and fresh views. The festival's first day (May 23) is, as every year, dedicated to Greek jazz, so the three winners of this year's competition, Tania Giannouli Trio (Greece / official entry), Lia Hide (Jazz+ category) and Christina Psycha (new music proposal) will take the Technopolis stage. The full line-up of this year's Athens Jazz will be announced soon.

Furthermore, after two pandemic years, from May 20 to 29, a series of new side events, along with the festival per se, will create a whole festival experience that we have all missed so much. Along with the METApolis photography exhibition and the Meet Market, the main side events of the festival in recent years, there will be outdoor screenings, a photography exhibition dedicated to the women in jazz, an international conference with presentations and workshops and a club program in Athens' favourite music scenes with live shows and DJ sets.

Let there be… Athens Jazz & stay tuned!
