He started his career in the local jazz scene in 1976 playing with some of the greatest Italian musicians. At the same time he played in international jazz festivals both in Italy and abroad with his own groups or as a sideman. With the new century, he started creating transnational groups through which musicians such as Nguyên Lê, Julian Arguelles, Perico Sambeat, Markus Stockhausen, Martin France, Gianluigi Trovesi, Norma Winstone and others have passed through. Alongside his teaching duties (at conservatories such as the Conservatory of Music Giuseppe Verdi in Milan), Riccardo Luppi has his own quartet – called Riccardo Luppi's Mure Mure and is made up of young European musicians – as well as the sextet The Duke Ellington Project alongside a quintet and a 12-member group that presents its own compositions and is called The Riccardo Luppi Ensemble. Of course, Luppi also plays with various duets and trios of free improvisation...
