Almost 60 years after the release of Greek Cooking, the quintessential album for passionate lovers of Greek folk, eastern sounds and world fusions, musicians from multiple generations of the Greek jazz scene have come together to revisit the themes first explored by the underground collaboration between saxophonist Phil Woods and bouzouki player Iordanis Tsomidis. Working with a bouzouki player that grounds the project in the American immigrant past and the authenticity of Greek folk and a singer that bridges the gap between East and West, the Greek Cooking band recomposes the modal elements of the American ‘60s without the constraints of the studio recording process and the touristy ethnic clichés characteristic of the era. Using the original materials from the 1967 release as a foundation, the Greek Cooking band will take the stage of Athens Jazz not to imitate the legendary album, but to set it free, starting a new dialogue between Greek tradition and American jazz.
